I decided awhile ago that come the beginning of the year it was time to finalize the baby’s room and get everything in place for his arrival. Apparently I’m the one “nesting”. We were both careful not to overdo the baby room, both of us preferring a simple and less cluttered approach. We headed to the store to stock up on baby supplies. There is nothing scarier than the baby section of a store packed full of pregnant women. I’ve been in this situation several times now and have yet to find a successful strategy. At every turn there is another pregnant lady walking down the isle in the opposite direction. I turn to run but no doubt another lady turns the corner and I am trapped for the time being. I have since learned from the sighs, huffs, and stare downs of pregnant women to leave my cart at the end of the isle. In spite of that I still somehow always find a way to park it right in front of the one item that everyone seems to be seeking. This time one lady let me know her displeasure by quickly thrusting her hips into the cart and sending it flying. I later found that this was probably just part of her and her pregnant cohorts’ plan. As my cart was now unprotected at the end of the isle, someone came by and snatched the last baby bjorn out of it. Chris 0 pregnant women +25.
Christmas arrived and after having received an email from Santa that I may have been on the naughty list this year I was happy that my last minute efforts were acknowledged and Santa did indeed make an appearance. In the days leading up to Christmas day we received many packages, cards, and well wishes. Kitty and I are both so thankful to have the family and friends we do and can’t wait for baby Luca to meet you all. You are all very special to us. Thank you so much and Merry Christmas!
Since we were unable to travel to Oregon for Christmas my mom and Leo came down for a visit. We had fun talking, sharing stories, dining, and seeing a few sights. On Sunday we went out and did some baby shopping. We are so appreciative of my mom’s gifts. By the time she and Leo left we had a new crib, changing table, dresser and hutch, as well as a mattress and changing pad. Later we headed over to the Santa Monica pier for the afternoon, where a tall naked man wearing only a loin cloth and wrapped in snakes was there to greet us. Welcome to LA. We walked through Old Town Pasadena at night and had fun sharing Pasadena, our home, and the life Kitty and I have made for ourselves.
Another baby shower! This time I celebrated with friends from physical therapy school on a cold and rainy Saturday night. We played a couple of fun games, including identifying names of various baby animals and guessing how big my tummy is. Karen overestimated my size by cutting her piece of yarn almost twice as big as I actually am! We all had a good laugh over that. The rest of the evening was spent eating homemade lasagna and carrot cake, admiring baby pictures of each other, and opening some very fun and thoughtful gifts. We all live in different parts of LA, so more than anything it was good to just spend time with each other (while I still have a little left!).
Thank you all for your wonderful thoughts and name suggestions. After much thought and discussion we decided on Luca, “bringer of light”. His middle name will be Lee after my grandfather Cyral Lee Bowling, my father Steven Lee Bowling, and myself Christopher Lee Bowling. Baby Luca is doing well and pretty much moves continuously throughout the day. We continue to attend different classes at Huntington Hospital. It’s such a great hospital and we’ve learned a lot of great things. I’m definitely getting more and more excited as his birthday approaches and can’t wait to finally see him.
My friends at work threw me a baby shower this weekend. One of my coworkers brought her 6-month old baby girl, so of course we spent the whole time playing with her. It was a good window into the future for me, to see where our little one will be in just a few short months! There was one main gift for me to open – apparently my coworkers pitched in to get us a car seat/stroller set. What a surprise! It was good timing, since Chris and I had just been discussing whether or not we thought the stroller would fit in the trunk of my car. As we quickly approach our due date, we have been entering more into “nesting” mode, and we’ve started preparing our house for the little one’s arrival. He’s going to be here in no time!
We unknowingly brought back a souvenir from our Thanksgiving trip – a nice cold complete with cough and stuffy nose. Between the two of us we’ve missed several days of work this past week. We’ve been trying to get a lot of rest and drink a lot of fluids. The baby doesn’t seem to mind much – he’s been moving and kicking more than ever – and stronger too! He’s recently discovered the area under my ribs and likes to put his feet in there. It’s a little uncomfortable, but in a way I don’t mind because it reminds me to sit up straight so I can breathe better.
