It’s Thanksgiving tomorrow and normally we wait till after to get our tree but December is super busy this year. I have to travel to CA for work and Kitty and I are taking a trip to Vegas to see some shows for my birthday, so we packed up everyone today and headed out to the Christmas tree farm.
It was a much anticipated affair, three years in the making. After countless hours of watching her brother’s and sister’s classes, imitating every move they made, and asking repeatedly if she could have a turn, we woke up this morning with great excitement as we prepared to take Mia to her first gymnastics class!
Luckily her class is at the same time as Autumn’s, so big sister got to help out with lining up at the top of the stairs and getting through the group warmup.
She looked for me periodically throughout her class and flashed her biggest grin with all her teeth and two big dimples, gave me a thumbs up and blew lots of kisses.
Great job today, chickadee, we are so proud of you!
Happy birthday to our sweet little chickadee who turned 3 today! You are our firecracker, comedian, tornado, singer, dancer, actor, daredevil, doctor, and snuggly love bug. You shine brighter than the sun, you laugh about as close as one can get to a Dr. Evil laugh while still being completely adorable, you rush to give us anaconda squeezes as soon as we arrive home and walk in the door, and you poke your head around our shoulders to stare deeply into our eyes with pure love and wonder. You are exhausting while at the same time being a source of pure joy and delight, and all too often we have to turn our heads to hide a smile or a laugh when you should be getting a time out. Thank you for bringing so much color, and spark, and sweet, sweet love into our family. We love you to the end of the rainbow!
Today our little dragon turned 5! Autumn, you constantly amaze us with your beautiful brain and the depths of your thoughts and ideas. You come up with the most insightful explanations about the world around you and it is a delight to witness the inner workings of your mind. Our favorite example of late is your reasoning for the word “eclipse:” because it starts with an “e” and the moon clips onto the sun! Brilliant! At the same time we love how your brain can relax and let your creative energy flow into your amazing artwork. Whether you are painting with watercolors or drawing with crayons, your artwork seems to flow effortlessly from your fingers onto the canvas. Your endless drawings of our family are more precious than gold. We love that you love the planets and space, reading books, cooking, riding your bike, and radiohead. And it is so magical how you turn into a fish when you jump into water. Love you more than the multiverse, little dragon!
We’ve been in Hawaii for almost a week catching up with family and friends. We’ll share some memories in another post. This one is dedicated to the amazing night we had with the Soul Signature Ohana.
When coming to Ohau this time I wanted to add more story from my right 1/2 sleeve onto my left and Kitty wanted to get her first tattoo. Lopeti (Raspets) was who had done my previous piece and we both wanted him to help us with these new ones. Lopeti is an amazing artist and soul. He really puts the love of his craft into his work and was able to capture Kitty’s story perfectly.
Soul Signature is truly one big Ohana. Sua Suluape Toeutu’u Aisea was welcoming guests, tattooing, and playing the occasional drums with the keiki.
Kitty’s took several hours and afterwards it was my turn. This time I was getting a shoulder cap on the left side. Lopeti added so many elements of my family and heritage to the piece it turned out perfect. You’ll notice Kitty and I both have the Enata representing our marriage and 3 kids.
All pau at 2am? Not yet…
As luck / fate would have it there happened to be a gathering of the top most venerated artists in the world. Soul Signature was ground zero for the gathering. The tattoo legend Freddy Negrete checked out both our tattoos and took some time to get a pic with Kitty.
Most of the night people were waiting for the arrival of the master and father Sua Sulu’ape Petelo. His plane landed after midnight and he came right over. He is such a kind soul and took time to talk story with us for awhile before the crowd arrived. Watch the video above if you’re not familiar with him but he is also a tattoo icon and cultural legend.
It was a long night for the kids they danced and partied as long as they could till they eventually passed out on the tatau mats for pe’a and hand tapping in the back.
People from all over the world showed up while we were getting tattooed. We met some amazing people from Tahiti, Samoa, New Zealand, Europe, modern Hawaii torch bearers, and even Rich from the Honolulu Tatau MC. Check out our little Ohana in the background. It was an amazing night with some of the most Aloha we’ve ever felt. It was truly a special night at a special place. Mahalo nui loa to Lopeti, Aisea, and the entire Soul Signature Ohana.
