We went camping a few weekends ago at Beverly Beach State Park, on the Oregon coast. It was a bit of a cold weekend, but we lucked out in the rain department, as it didn’t rain on us until the very end. It was quite an adventure taking the two little ones with us, especially now that Autumn is so mobile and wanted to explore everything. She’s also going through separation anxiety, so she and I were pretty much attached the entire time. It was a lot of fun, though, and we were glad to be able to spend some time with family on the beach.
We had a total of 4 campsites all close together
On Saturday morning we woke up bright and early to a symphony of birds and squirrels greeting us good morning. Luca enjoyed a nice cup of hot chocolate with his breakfast by the fire.
Autumn decided to try out Luca’s bike while he wasn’t looking
One of the best things we did was lay out a big play area for the kids to spread out on
All I have to say is thank goodness for Thomas the train and friends, who kept Luca occupied while we cleaned up and got ready for the day
Then, with kites and frisbee in tow and the baby asleep in the Ergo, we headed out to the beautiful beach
Luca was ready to get the sillies out, and got straight into running several laps in the wide, open space
Meanwhile the boys got straight into a game of frisbee
After assessing the strength and direction of the wind, Chris and Grandpa broke out the kites and sent them high into the sky
My dad spent a lot of time flying kites as a kid, and always enjoys having a chance to keep his skills up
Luca and Grandpa fly their kites together
Kite flying with Daddy on the beach – what could be more fun?
After a good, long nap Autumn decided to wake up and join in on the fun
Time to walk
Let’s go Mama
This way Mama!
Ok race me!
Then my siblings and I had to recreate one of our favorite pictures from several years ago, on a beach in Southern California.
Here’s the California version, circa 2006:
Here’s the Oregon version:
Auntie Kimmy and Uncle Kyan had a few more sillies to get out before we were done
Ok, time to wind down and dig in the sand for a bit
It may not be a Hawaiian beach, but it’s equally lovely with our little ohana
A cute boy in a hole in a knoll
Alright, back to the campsite for some rest. Autumn and Luca settle down with some books.
Meanwhile the aunties and uncles play a few rounds of corn hole
Autumn takes Luca’s bike out for one more go. I brought a bike for her too, but of course she wasn’t interested in it.

Thanks for a great camping trip, family!
As we all know Luca loves books. One of his favorite series is the Little Critter series. One of the first Little Critter books he ever got was Just Me and My Dad. In this adventure the dad and son go camping, fishing, and have lots of fun. Ever since reading this book, and the 100,000 times that followed, Luca has asked me to take him camping and fishing.
This weekend we were able to finally go camping in the great outdoors… of our backyard.
Sunday we headed out to go fishing. We found a spot by a little water fall on a little bank under a tree. Ok cast away. 1…2….3….woooshhhh
Here’s how you reel
Waiting…
Luca got one!!
That’s a big rainbow trout
By the end of the day Luca had caught 4 rainbow trout (15 1/2 “, 14 1/2″, 14″, and 12”). We cleaned and descaled them.
Luca and his other love cooking. He helped prepare the fish and stuff them with herbs from his garden. A little lemon, salt, pepper, and some olive oil and they were ready for the grill.
Camping, fishing, and cooking… just me and my dad.
